Feb 4 China has announced that it will begin testing a SARS vaccine onto humans after successful trial on monkeys show no serious side effects and effective in preventing infection. Scientists said the first testing phase would last three months in either Beijing, Guangdong province, or a region nearby Guangxi. The first phase will consist of 15 women and 15 men ranging from 18 to 40 years old. The second phase will be tested among a larger sample in a wider age range.
Feb 13 The Committee on Trust Fund the SARS recommend the approval of 297 applications, involving $73 million. These applicants are suffering from claimed dysfunction and need help from the Social Welfare Department for medical expenses. So far, a total of 714 applications have been received; 299 of which are families of deceased SARS patients, 414 are recovered SARS patients, and only one is a 'suspected' patient.
Feb 23 While Professor Liu Jianlun stayed at the Metropole Hotel in Hong Kong, he infected at least 16 guest visitors. WHO believes most of the 8422 cases and 916 deaths can be traced back to the Metropole Hotel. Now, room 911 where Professor Liu stayed exist as a museum and every old numbered room on the ninth floor where Professor Liu stayed, has been changed.
Feb 24 Toronto nurse sued city, Ontario and federal government for claiming that there were no new SARS cases to raise air travel to Toronto. Yet, subsequently, the nurse contracted SARS and was admitted into a hospital two weeks after officials suggested that the outbreak was over.
Feb 25 Hong Kong and Dutch researchers used Interferon-alpha on monkeys and found the drug, which is used to fight against Hepatitis C, slowed down the spread of SARS. This is a good sign for future treatments. Professor Ron Penny says a key finding is in how Interferon-alpha work against the SARS virus.
Feb 25 Toronto residents are furious at the federal government because they didn't take quick action against the second SARS outbreak.
